Dear Parents:
Wiley's Way was written by a group of high
school students to promote the importance of higher education to a younger audience. If
your children work hard, they can do well in school and will also be ready for life after
high school. Talk with your children about the importance of going to a university, community
college, or a technical college. Students who graduate from high school and go on to college
or technical school earn about a million dollars more over their lifetime than those who don’t.
They also have a better choice of jobs, which leads to more opportunities. Talk with your children
about what career they want when they get older and share with them how a college education can
help make those dreams come true.
It’s never too early to start planning! Here are some tips to start or continue a college legacy
in your family:
Believe in your children. Tell them that they are bright and that they can
do it. Let them know you’re committed to helping them achieve their dreams.
Get involved! Visit the school or call their teachers and counselors
to find out what programs are available to prepare your children for success in college.
Encourage them to be involved in school and community activities. Go to the library together.
Help your children find a mentor or tutor.
Visit a college campus together. Explore possible careers with your children. Ask a trusted
college graduate to talk with your children about the importance of college and the difference
that it made in their life.
