"College Book Project" Team Job Descriptions

Writers/Illustrators: The "Young Writers" will brainstorm, draft, write, and illustrate the book. With suggestions and feedback from the Editors, the Writers/Illustrators will also make necessary revisions. In addition, the Writers/Illustrators are expected to cooperate with all members of the team (including Managers and Editors), supportive and respectful of their peers, and ready to take artistic risks (which might often mean sharing ideas, even if only verbally or as constructive feedback to others' ideas!). (Key areas of expertise: brainstorming ideas, developing story, and being creative.)

Team Managers: Lisa and Megan will organize and mobilize the Writers/Illustrators in a way that will produce the best group dynamics. They will facilitate communication (dialogue) and consensus among the Writers/Illustrators by leading team initiatives and meetings outside of the regular meetings whenever necessary. The managers are expected to listen openly to the writers in order to give the most constructive feedback. (Key area of expertise: initiating and moderating team cohesion and effectiveness.)

Editors / Writers-in-Residence: Michelle and Alexandra will edit the text that the students produce and share their experience and knowledge as writers. This includes offering prompts/suggestions and asking questions throughout the writing process that might help the writers produce their best written material. The editors are expected to listen openly to the writers in order to give the most constructive feedback. (Key area of expertise: structure and form relating to various elements of story such as syntax, character, setting, conflict, and plot.)

"The best editor is a sensitive reader who is thinking with a pencil in her hand, questioning word choice, syntax, and tense. An editor is someone who probes the writer with insightful questions, who smoothes transitions or suggests them where none exist. […] There is a basic architecture to every book, and if the author has a wobbly narrative leg or an insufficient thesis to stand on, the editor must find the blueprint or create one." --Betsy Lerner, The Forest for the Trees

(Note: The Editors and Managers will work closely together in order to coordinate their efforts and create the best environment for the Writers/Illustrators.)

Director: Tom will serve as liaison with the College for Texans Campaign and UT Press, as well as director of the project and occasional teacher's aide.

Visiting Artists: David Rice, Keith Graves, Jonathan Clarke, and other artists will periodically visit the book team meetings to offer consultant advice on various facets of the book.
