SUMMER WRITING INTENSIVE

The summer writing intensive officially marked the transition of the book project from a classroom-based / student-teacher model to a workshop-based / business model. In other words, the emphasis switched from learning to actual production.

For the month of June, the students and editors met all day, 5 days a week, in the seminar space at the Katherine Anne Porter House in Kyle Texas.

The first week was devoted to making a plan and getting organized. Most importantly, the students completed the story outline that they began in May.

At the end of the first week, the students divided into three groups. THE STORY DEVELOPERS were responsible for mapping out the story scene by scene. These outlines were written on large (2' x 3') post-it notes and hung on the walls and windows of the room. The WRITERS were responsible for writing the actual text of the book. They referred to the story map detailed by the story developers. The ILLUSTRATORS were responsible for drawing pictures for the book. They came up with a rough list of the pictures they would need, and divided up the work.

As the WRITERS and ILLUSTRATORS completed text and images, they submitted their work to the EDITORS who typed and edited the text and scanned-in the illustrations. The editors then made a mockup of the book using layout software. Thus, students would be able to see the integrated results of their work they day after they had generated it.
