Gearing Up for Summer

      Before end of the spring:

    • -Have students complete application to participate in the project as paid writer rather than student
    •
    • -Conduct individual conferences/interviews with students as part of application process
    •
    • -Provide the students with written feedback about their progress so far
    •
    • -Introduce the concept of "workshopping"
    •
    • -Break class into workshop and writing time with an eye on allowing students to lead class at least 50% of the time
    •
    • -Have banquet / open house for students and parents; gives parents a chance to see their kids' progress and feel like they are a valuable part of the project. The parents' involvement and dedication to the project is CRUCIAL. This is also a way to thank the parents for their involvement and dedication so far.
    •   -Come up with a plan to meet in a non-classroom environment (that will be more conducive to "business model" environment) at least two days a week during the summer

      For the summer:

        1.  Split the students into three teams: writers, illustrators, and story developers.
        2.  Set up a calendar for the students with deadlines and daily goals. The students will be working on their own, so they need this kind of structure.
        3.  Set up a working space for the students that gives them the room to illustrate on a table, post ideas on the wall, etc.
        4.  Set up a separate working space for the editors. Use "in" and "out" boxes.
        5.  Provide snacks for the students as "brain food."
        6.  At the end of each week, give
        7.  In general…make their working environment as comfortable and conducive to productivity as possible.
        8.  See "EDITORS EDITING PROCESS" document for ideas on how teachers/editors and students can work together.
